simon (aka crayola)
having trained as a screenprinter & designer in 1986 doing corporate design & print on t-shirts, posters, stickers, even oven fascias, simon started to use his new found skills as part of his other life — that of underground band member and concert promoter.
this led to printing the now infamous "DRUGS NOT JOBS" t-shirts made famous by spiritualized (though actually created for kilgore trout), as well as shirts for such bands as 14 iced bears, the mctells and the television personalities. he also designed posters and flyers for local concerts and record releases as well as setting up his own record label for which he did the vast majority of design & print.
by 1990 simon had begun to publish books for local writers, all now sadly out of print, but most of which can be found in the british library. this work included cover design, print and copy editing and led directly to simon reading a degree in visual culture at falmouth university college.
after graduating from falmouth university college, simon took a position at nation records, first as press officer and soon afterwards as label manager. simon also did the cover design for several releases on nation and its subsidiary flo records, along with designing all the label's advertising.
in 2001 simon took a position with charmenko working in international music management (tours with moby, iggy pop, manu chao, dead kennedys), artist management (pere ubu, spearmint, laibach, band of holy joy), record label management (hitBACK records, voice of shade).
at the same time he established the kabukikore record label, organised and promoted concerts in central london (including billy childish, montana pete and the free french) and took commissions for design work from independent artists (including the reverse, posset, nightingales and steve beresford).
now kabukikore has been laid to rest and drinkmilk has been born.
